A HOUSE OF BRICK

By Howard Menkes

I once had a home my furniture looked drab in

Short and squat, I lived in a log cabin

The shower ran dry, but the toilet would leak

The ceiling was cracked and the floor would creak

And through my log walls the wind would

      whistle

So loud at night, it sounded like a missel

I needed a house where the roof was strong, and

      the walls were thick

A new home of mine; a house of brick!

To build my brick house, I hired a mason

He seemed sort of odd, his name was Jason

Jason the mason said he'd build my house in a

      day, it wasn't a stunt

But I'd have to pay him in cash, the money up

      front

So I went to the bank, and got a Home

      Improvement Loan

He said, "Pay me now and come back tonight,

      you'll have a home!"

So I spent the day at the library, reading comic

      books and subway maps

And when I returned and saw what he'd built, I

      thought I'd collapse!

The structure was a sight to appall

The ceiling was low, but the floor was tall

And when my anger over the interior had

      subsided

I noticed the walls were uneven, my home was

      lopsided

I asked Jason, "Where is my front door?"

He said, "look above you, it's on the third floor!"

And as Jason left me agape, he said there was one

      more little goof

He remembered to give me a chimney, but he

forgot to put on the roof

And today when I stare in digust at my house of

      brick

I think of my log cabin, and get mighty awful

      homesick!
